Sancreed Beacon & Tony’s Wood

About This Project

Originally started as a guerrilla tree planting project by my friend Tony Hole in the late 1990’s, I joined him in 2009 a few years before he died. The owners, Cornwall Heritage Trust asked me to become Warden and Woodland Manager of the whole 16 hectare site in 2012. During that time a 12 acre area has been set aside and designated a Community Woodland, providing woodfuel and a site of recreation for the local community. Working with various contractors, and partners (such as Cornwall Wildlife Trust) on the rest of the site we have managed to reduce the bracken and scrub through mechanical cutting (with scythes, tractor& topper and brushcutters), swaling (annual burning of the gorse and scrub) and follow up grazing with 4 Dartmoor ponies . This has helped this once neglected site regain its SSSI status as a Lowland Heathland and improve public access.
